Examples: Kirchoff's Voltage Law

<^< Kirchoff's Voltage Law | Course Index | Worksheet: Kirchoff's Voltage Law >^>

Example 1:

Determine the voltage drop across R1 and the current flowing in it.

The Kirchhoff's Voltage Law equation for this circuit is:

+VR1 + E2 - E3 - E1 = 0

hence:

VR1 = E3 + E1 - E2 = 1.5 + 6 - 3 = 4.5 V

We can now use Ohm's Law to determine the current in R1 from:

I = VR1 / R1 = 4.5 / 90 = 0.05 A = 50 mA

Example 2:

Determine the value of VX and the current flowing in R1.

The Kirchhoff's Voltage Law equation for this circuit is:

+45 - VX - 12 - 18 = 0

hence:

VX = 45 - 12 - 18 = 45 - 30 = 15 V

We can now use Ohm's Law to determine the current in R1 from:

I = VX / R1 = 15 / 7.5 = 2 A
