Hi
If I buy the 16bit budle can I rogramme 8 bit devices (with appropriate pack) or do I need to put buy an additional programmer (EB06v9)
The 16 bit programmer (EB091 I think) doesn't seem to have any obvious way to programme devices other than the embedded one - am I missing something

The EB006 covers a range of 8-bit PIC devices.
The EB091 board is a fixed single chip dsPIC33EP board, the chip cannot be changed but is a very powerful example of a dsPIC33 and packs most of the features of the other devices in the range.
So it depends on what you need to be able to do.

what I'm trying to do is get the best bank form my very limited budget whilst maintaining flexibility for the future should the need arise.
Trying to find relevant information on Matrix's website always seems to be an uphill task, it's one of the reasons I get put off buying your software (the other being in accurate simulation)

As Ben points out, the EB091 (16Bit) board is very powerful but the device is fixed and cannot be changed.
If you want to use 16bit and be able to change devices, try the EB064 board.
Whereas the EB006 can program a wide range of 8bit devices from simple 8pin pics to the 40pin devices.
If you are looking to get into microcontrollers and want flexibility and future proofing, I would go for the EB006 for you first board.
It works with almost all the current range of PDIP devices from microchip.
Also look at the HP4832 Package with the Dev-Board, this gives great value.
Using flowcode, there is no real difference in using any of these programmers.
