Hello Everyone and Happy New Year,
It looks like I need to put a microcontroller into a marine (diesel automotive) environment.
Does anyone have any actual hands on experience with automotive PSU's and could give me some advice how to implement a reliable uP supply? Ideally I need 3.3V and 5V @1A max
What I have in place at the moment is not the usual configuration but a dual battery bank setup with latching power relays to disconnect, isolate or bridge the banks as the charge level dictates, so I foresee some nasty switching spikes floating around.
My initial thoughts were to use suitable TVS's and some inductors feeding a linear power supply (automotive grade 7805 or similar). Looking around the net I found this LTC3895 http://cds.linear.com/docs/en/article/P ... ession.pdf (which looks great) which addresses all my concerns but I don't have the PCB board making facilities or soldering capabilities to do the under-chip soldering required - I have Veroboard and that's it.
Thanks
MAtt

Re: Automotive PSU
Hi Matt
What's the input voltage ?
We use DCDC convertors at work for a lot of our products Both standard and railway spec (these are more expensive but have more filtering)
have a look at traco or xp power
https://www.tracopower.com/products/bro ... onverters/
https://www.xppower.com/Products/DC-DC- ... Hole-Mount
this is not a bad device

Hope this helps

Re: Automotive PSU
He Steve,
Good to here from you again.
Yeah 12Vdc nominal and I think 14.4Vcd charge possibly upto 15.2V - (I cant remember if AGM's have a maintenance de-sulphuring 15.2Vdc type cycle)
I will have a look at the links now
Matt
