Advice Please

Hi All
I am in need of some advice / assistance if you can help me out.
I have been given a "Project" and its a bit out of my comfort zone TBH but suppose thats the way to push my self and chance to learn new things and get back into flowcode.
We have an old load bank that has an RS232 Port we are wanting to obtain data from the load bank , i have a manual that has a register list. We also require some digital input monitoring too so was thinking maybe a ECIO28 module with an RS232 Port and some Input Pins and reading the data from a excel sheet connected to the PC via the USB port on the ECIO.
I have no idea on where to start with this.
My first port of call is trying to control the load bank and obtain data in a basic manor by first using tera term or putty.
Its been a very long time since i dabbled in RS232 (20 + Years) at collage.
Some pointers would be great
