hi
Does xm10u contain an rs232 chip in it ?
So that it could communicate with the pic micro contoller.
thanks

Nope, the XM10U basically translates the modulation sent along the power line into TTL level signals that can then be interpreted/generated by a micro. It also provides some basic error checking (e.g. waiting for the repeated second message to appear before relaying it to the micro).
There is a similar device called a CM11U. This does have an RS232 interface and is designed to be used by a PC. I don't know what limitations it has or what format the RS232 commands are in. Using this would mean you would need a MAX converter chip to connect to a PICmicro.
