Horizon Nuclear Power invest in Locktronics for North Wales students

Horizon Nuclear Power have recently invested in the Energy & Environment Locktronics Kits for the 5 secondary schools on Anglesey, Wales in order to increase the number of practical lessons, to support the new Physics curriculum there and hopefully to increase the interest in Physics and other STEM subjects for post-16 onwards.

The kits being presented to Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern by Sasha Davies (Head of Strategic Development Wales; Horizon Nuclear Power); Claire Burgess (Education Programme Coordinator, Horizon Nuclear Power); Eurwyn Hughes (head of Design & Technology); Llion Francis (Physics Teacher – working with Horizon to map lessons).

Claire Burgess, Education Programme Coordinator at Horizon explains;

“The Locktronics kits and Matrix as a company were recommended to us by one of our partners, STEMWorks, and from discussions with teachers, the Energy & Environment kits were identified as the ones most suitable to support the new Physics GCSE syllabus in Wales.

The kits will mainly be used to teach KS4 Physics students within the schools, but the teachers were also interested in the opportunity that the kits will give them to use with lower ages groups, as well as with post-16 students. Horizon Nuclear Power is currently working with two KS4 Physics teachers from Anglesey to map the kits to the new Physics syllabus, with the mapping provision then being made available to the other 3 schools on the Island, as well as feature on the Horizon website, for schools across Wales and England to access the provision.

Horizon Nuclear Power presented kits to two schools before the end of the summer term, and will be presenting the remaining kits to the other 3 schools in the next month.

The Energy and Environment kit covers topics including solar cells and their operation, electricity generators and much more.
