Objective:
| To investigate the action of a C-R series circuit when connected to an a.c. supply
|
---|
Underpinning knowledge:
| Alternating current and voltage. Capacitive reactance.Impedance. Ohm's Law.
|
---|
Apparatus:
| TINA circuit file, or apparatus to make the following circuit.

---|
Initial Settings:
| C = 10µF, R = 1kΩ, a.c. Supply of 10V at 200Hz
|
---|
Requires:
| Paper, Linear graph paper, pen or pencil.
|
---|
Instructions:
(a) Using initial settings determine Z from Z = V/I.
(b) Calculate the impedance of the circuit, Z, from Z = √(R2 + X2) where X = 1/(2π f C)
(c) Compare the results from (a) and (b) (they should be the same!)
(d) Change the frequency of the a.c. Supply from 100Hz to 200Hz.
(e) Repeat steps (a) to (c).
|
Observations:
Confirm that Z = V/I = √(R2 + X2) at both 100Hz and 200Hz
|
Further work:
Determine the value of capacitance that would produce an impedance of 1.41kΩ at 100Hz when connected in series with a 1kΩ resistor. Check your answer using your circuit simulation software.
