Worksheet: Impedance

<^< Impedance | Course Index | Assessment: Fundamentals >^>

Objective: To investigate the action of a C-R series circuit when connected to an a.c. supply
Underpinning knowledge: Alternating current and voltage. Capacitive reactance.Impedance. Ohm's Law.
Apparatus: TINA circuit file, or apparatus to make the following circuit.
TINA Circuit File: Click here to download circuit file
Initial Settings: C = 10µF, R = 1kΩ, a.c. Supply of 10V at 200Hz
Requires: Paper, Linear graph paper, pen or pencil.
Instructions:

(a) Using initial settings determine Z from Z = V/I.

(b) Calculate the impedance of the circuit, Z, from Z = √(R2 + X2) where X = 1/(2π f C)

(c) Compare the results from (a) and (b) (they should be the same!)

(d) Change the frequency of the a.c. Supply from 100Hz to 200Hz.

(e) Repeat steps (a) to (c).

Observations:

Confirm that Z = V/I = √(R2 + X2) at both 100Hz and 200Hz

Further work:

Determine the value of capacitance that would produce an impedance of 1.41kΩ at 100Hz when connected in series with a 1kΩ resistor. Check your answer using your circuit simulation software.
