Example 1:

A lead acid battery comprises six series-connected 2V cells . If the battery is rated at 12 Ah (and assuming that the battery is fully charged), determine the terminal voltage of the battery and the current that it should deliver for a period of 4 hours.

The terminal voltage of the battery will be 6 x 2 V or 12 V. The current that the battery should provide during a 4 hour discharge period will be given by (12 / 4) A or 3 A.

Example 2:

A nickel cadmium battery comprises ten individual series-connected cells (each having a nominal discharge voltage of 1.2V). If the battery is rated at 4.8 Ah at the 6 hour discharge rate, determine the terminal voltage of the battery and its energy content.

The terminal voltage of the battery will be 10 x 1.2 V or 12 V. The energy content of the battery will be given by:

Energy content = 4.8 Ah x 12 V = 57.6 Wh
