Diagram of an electromagnet and the field it generates

An electromagnet (or solenoid) can be formed by winding turns of wire into a coil. This arrangement concentrates the magnetic field in the centre of the coil.

When a current is applied to the solenoid, a magnetic field will appear within and around it. The magnetic field pattern resembles that produced by a permanent magnet.
