The voltage produced across a transformer winding is directly proportional to the number of turns on the winding. Thus:
VP/VS = NP/NS
where VP is the primary voltage, VS is the secondary voltage, NP is the number of turns on the primary winding and NS is the number of turns on the secondary winding.
The ratio of primary to secondary turns on a transformer, NP/NS , is known as the turns-ratio of the transformer.
Finally, the turns-per-volt rating for a transformer is sometimes quoted. This rating is given by:
t.p.v. = NP/VP = NS/VS
