The equation which relates current flow in the collector, base, and emitter currents is:
IE = IB + IC
where IEis the emitter current, IBis the base current, and IC is the collector current (all expressed in the same units).
In normal operation the base-emitter junction is forward biased and, for a typical silicon transistor, the voltage between the base and the emitter will be approximately 0.65V when the transistor is operating in a conventional amplifier stage.
