Sorry for push guy*S
i have a official play with firmware at the ESP8266 last weeks
The ESP8266 can used as a 32bit Mikrocontroller too, so i switch GPIO over new added AT Command with UART and directly over WIFI by static TCP Server with a ANdroid APP.
I make a little fun Case and add accu, extern Ant. If you want, you can see this here. I have add a lot of ESP8266 videos
here the last two
http://youtu.be/AIIjqaI3QBA
http://youtu.be/g_dE2tfl2EA

case moding and standalone tcp server with
at command for GPIO switch
and
WIFI Command fpr GPIO switch

i switch LED in first example, then a Relais for power motors ect i have not use a extern mcu all done by the ESP8266ex with wifi app & AP mode that comes from ESP8266 too
..done ;-) ;-)

I have seen Benj's post in ESP8266 too, i will play with this in this week too, nice ;-)
Now IoT / IoE can start :-)

best wishes!

Rudi, could you post an example of how you send a variable from a html page back to flowcode?
I need to enter a couple of String and INT values into HTML Forms and press a button to send these values to the MCU and then write them to EEPROM.
