Instrument clusters

Post by bercioiu »

Hi!
I have a 1976 BMW 635 CSI with the instrument clusters almost dead for a long time.
Seeing this video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDO_D4UShCs ) I would like to "resurrect" with a new instrument clusters. I have one from a Passat 2003. Al the signals for BMW, are there, in 2 connectors.
My problem is that I don`t know how this new "motors" works... I tried to treat them like steppers but no luck, the pointer it`s spins with no sense...
The motors have two coils "in cross", so, I have four wires.
There is somebody who play with that kind of motors?

We did some retrofitting on old coachbus clusters by replacing coilmotor with servo and made controller board that could drive the meter by using sensors of the bus, and we did some CAN-bus driven ones too. Solution was easy, but the calibration of those was a one hell. But for hobby and play I think servo would work fine :)

Usually the pulse that drives the rpm comes from alternator, maybe basically the speed sensor works same way?
Ill just keep the good work up!

My problem is that I don`t know how to drive that kind of motors (coils). I thought that someone was playing with them.
The signals are not a problem, for speed the car have a hall sensor that give me one pulse/revolution of the wheel and for rpm, I can reed from the ignition coil (divided by 6).
If nobody knows how to drive that motors, I will replace them with some servo or something...
