<^< Resistors in Series | Course Index | Resistors in Parallel >^>
Objective:
| To investigate resistors connected in series.
|
---|
Underpinning knowledge:
| Resistance. Preferred values. Series connections.
|
---|
Apparatus:
| TINA circuit file, or apparatus to make the following circuit.
|
---|
TINA Circuit File:
| Click here to download circuit file
|
---|
Initial Settings:
| R1 = 1kΩ, R2 = 2kΩ, R3 = 3kΩ.
|
---|
Requires:
| Paper, Linear graph paper, pen or pencil.
|
---|
Instructions:
(a) Using initial settings verify that R = R1 + R2 + R3.
(b) Change R1 to 15kΩ, R2 to 27kΩ and R3 to 33kΩ.
(c) Again check that R = R1 + R2 + R3.
|
Observations:
Confirm that, in each case, the effective resistance of the series combination of resistors is equal to the sum of the individual resistance values.
|
Further work:
Using only preferred value resistors in the E12 series, suggest how you could use a series combination of three fixed resistors to obtain the following values of resistance: 333Ω, 5Ω, and 3.75Ω. Check your answers using your simulation software.
