Examples: Radians

Example 1:

The rotating armature in a generator turns through a quarter of a cycle.

Express this in terms of (a) degrees and (b) radians.

(a) There are 360° in one complete cycle (i.e. one revolution). Hence there are 360/4 or 90° in one quarter of a cycle.

(b) There are 2π radians in one complete cycle (i.e. one revolution). Hence there are 2π/4 or π/2 radians in one quarter of a cycle

Example 2:

A robot arm turns through an angle of 215°.

What is this angle expressed in radians?

To convert from degrees to radians, divide by 57.3.

Hence 215° is equivalent to 215/57.3 = 3.75 radians.

Example 3:

A satellite tracking antenna turns through an angle of 2.5 radians.

What is this angle expressed in degrees?

To convert from radians to degrees, multiply by 57.3.

Hence 2.5 radians is equivalent to 2.5 x 57.3 = 143.25°.
