Transistor as a Current Amplifier

<^< Examples: Current Flow Model | Course Index | Worksheet: Transistor as a Current Amplifier >^>

In a simple transistor amplifier the collector current (IC) is related to the base current (IB) by the formula:

hFE = IC/IB

where hFE is the current gain (in common emitter mode).

Thus, if a small current is applied to the base of a transistor, the collector current will be hFE times larger. For example, if hFE = 100 and IB = 1mA, IC will be 100 x 1mA or 100mA. This fundamental relationship is the basis of the transistor both when used as a switch and when used as an amplifier.
