Alistair is the international sales manager at Matrix and has worked for the company for almost 7 years.
What did you do before coming here and what led you to Matrix?
Before coming to work at Matrix, I was a student at Leeds University studying business and marketing. I really liked the products at Matrix, and as a global seller the idea that I could travel supporting the business was really exciting.
What do you enjoy most about working at Matrix?
I like the variety of different activities my role offers, the fantastic travel opportunities and meeting new people from all over the world.
What does a typical day look like for you?
If I’m in the office, I will generally be in meetings with our resellers throughout the world ensuring they have everything they need to support their customers. Otherwise, I will be flying around the world meeting these guys, to demonstrate our products to them and their customers.
What are the biggest challenges you face working here?
The biggest challenge is probably working with people from all around the world. This means that there are often language barriers and time differences to work around, so I can often be found taking calls and answering messages at all times but this only strengthens my relationship with our global resellers and I love working with people from different cultures.
What qualifications do you have?
I have a Ba (Hons) degree in Business, marketing. From school I went to university and then Matrix!
What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
I wish I had taken year or two out to go travelling!
Alyce has worked for Matrix for 3 years and looks after our marketing.
Working closely with the sales team, she looks after our website and all of our social media channels.
What did you do before coming here and what led you to Matrix?
Before coming to Matrix, I worked in customer services for a company, mostly dealing with complaints and debt collection! After being there for 12 years, I decided I wanted a change, saw the job vacancy at Matrix and applied! Initially my job here was also customer services, but that has changed a bit over the past 3 years!
What do you enjoy most about working at Matrix?
I like that my work is quite varied, and I am in charge of my own workload, which gives me the freedom to choose how I work. Also, Matrix are incredibly flexible and understanding when it comes to family life! As a mum of 3, this is really important and means I never miss a sports day!
What does a typical day look like for you?
First thing, I check my diary to see if I have anything urgent that I need to work on. I then check our social media channels and reply to any emails that I have. Next I will look at the marketing calendar to see what we have planned and what I need to work on next!
What are the biggest challenges you face working here?
Within marketing, the biggest challenge I find is getting people to engage with your content.
What qualifications do you have? I have a BA (Hons) degree in Leadership and Management and a Diploma in Social Media Marketing.
What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
If you want something then go for it. If you try and it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t matter!
Ben works at Matrix as an Embedded Engineer and has been with the company for around 15 years.
What did you do before coming here and what led you to Matrix?
As part of my Masters course we used some of the Matrix E-blocks kit in the labs and so in my spare time I wrote a script that allowed the kit to be simulated on a computer allowing everyone on the course to complete coursework away from the lab. After that, the course instructor introduced me to John the Owner and MD at the time and the rest is history.
What do you enjoy most about working at Matrix?
The job is very varied. You are given high level tasks to do but it is really up to you as to how you go about fulfilling the role and you can contribute to the specification of the role to both suit your strengths and build on your weaknesses. Being an educational company you can really get to the core of the problems that scientists and engineers encounter and providing a useful solution to these problems can be very rewarding.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Coding in various languages, designing electronic circuits and PCBs, hand soldering, troubleshooting, advising production, sourcing components, dealing with customers and their requirements, curriculum content, keeping up to date with tech, juggling a to do list.
What are the biggest challenges you face working here?
A big challenge is knowing what to do next, with many things going on it can be hard to focus on a single thing at a time. What’s nice is not always chasing the biggest sale or profit but really providing a good solution to customers to solve their specific unique problems in a way that is simple for them to understand and build on.
What qualifications do you have?
BTEC in Electronics and Telecomms, BSc Cybernetics, MSc Embedded Systems.
What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
I did various programming and electronics jobs before but some were really not more than a repetitive monotonous drone role. My advice would be to not give up and not settle for a role that doesn’t fulfil and constantly test your skills. After my degree I left with a lot of debt and after a whole summer of applying for jobs I had nothing to show for it. The best thing I did was manage to find a funded Masters course to allow me to continue furthering my education and things naturally led on from there.
Jack is the senior mechanical engineering and has been with Matrix for 2 years. Since starting with Matrix, Jack has developed a number of existing products and has brought 2 brand new product ranges to market.
What did you do before coming here and what led you to Matrix?
I worked in a robotic exoskeleton start up company, specialising in exoskeleton motion capture for virtual reality gaming and experiences. Matrix provided me the opportunity to lead the mechanical engineering department and develop full ranges of products for their portfolio.
What do you enjoy most about working at Matrix?
The trust and responsibilities for development of your own work. I can design a new component for a new product in CAD and walk down to our manufacturing machines and prototype the part instantly. This can make development very quick!
What does a typical day look like for you?
It can range from designing complex mechanisms or structures in CAD all day, developing bills of materials for products, to dealing with suppliers and production issues. Making no one day the same!
What are the biggest challenges you face working here?
Developing products that have twice the functionality as our competitors for half the price is a challenge, all while trying to consider how a customer might use the product in the field.
What qualifications do you have?
I graduated University of Leeds with a MEng 1st class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering with a year in industry. With an ongoing application of becoming a chartered engineer.
What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
Failure isn’t bad, as long as you learnt something from it. Asking people with more knowledge about all kinds of subjects will make you more rounded.
Jimbo is the stores supervisor at Matrix and has worked here for 19 years. The stores department is responsible for the assembling of all kits and the dispatch every order.
What did you do before coming here and what led you to Matrix?
I came to work at Matrix on work experience in year 11, while I was still at school and have been here ever since!
What do you enjoy most about working at Matrix?
It’s a great environment to work in, the whole company works as a team. I am also a singer / songwriter and Matrix are really flexible when it comes to time off, so I am still able to perform and write / record music.
What does a typical day look like for you?
When I arrive at work, I check my emails and plan out the day’s schedule depending what orders have arrived. After briefing the kitting team on their work for the day, I start to organise orders for dispatch.
What are the biggest challenges you face working here?
We have a lot of large orders all due out at the same time and we can often be waiting on components or parts to be made before we can pack the order for dispatch. This can be difficult with tight lead times and often means working to short deadlines. Shipping quotes are also difficult to predict in the current climate.
What qualifications do you have?
I have a diploma in sports performance and excellence and am a qualified gym instructor and lifeguard. At Matrix though, I am qualified to give first aid and have a fork lift truck license.
What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

Liam is the Managing Director at Matrix and has worked here for 9 years.
What did you do before coming here and what led you to Matrix?
I worked in Marketing at the University of Huddersfield before Matrix. I am not ashamed to say that I was actually turned down from my first interview at Matrix, but the owner, John, came back to me almost 12 months later to offer me a role as things hadn’t worked out. That was in 2013 and the company was very different, but I liked the appeal of working in an SME and working with education felt like a good thing to do!
What do you enjoy most about working at Matrix?
Two things. Firstly the team I work with, who are all fantastic. Secondly, the fact that we help education institutions all over the world. Our equipment teaches and inspires the engineers and techies of tomorrow.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Morning – emails normally catching up a lot as we work with customers and partners all over the world we’re always on the go, we work from Australia to Canada and everywhere in between. I am normally meeting with dealers internationally over calls through the day and discussing with all our teams what they’re up to and where they’re at with their various projects.
What are the biggest challenges you face working here?
Challenges are great! We’re challenged every day whether it be with language barriers, training new teachers/instructors or thinking with our amazing R&D team about key product development decisions that are fundamental to our success.
What qualifications do you have?
After A Levels I achieved a degree in Marketing from Sheffield Hallam University.
What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
1. Embrace change. 2. Travel as much as possible. 3. Back yourself!
Sonia works in production at Matrix, building kit and components for our products. She has worked for the company for just over 2 years.
What did you do before coming here and what led you to Matrix?
Before coming to Matrix, I worked for 8 years as an assembler / supervisor at an electronics company called Redtronic who produced lighting and audio for emergency vehicles. Prior to that I worked for 17 years as an SMT assembler for a company called S2S. I enjoy working in electronics but due to the dynamics changing at my last company I felt a change was needed, that’s when fate led me to Matrix!
What do you enjoy most about working at Matrix?
I enjoy the team working and the encouragement I have received from everyone. I like all aspects of my role, but my personal favourite is operating the SMT machine.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day starts at 7am where I make sure everything is up and running as it should be, then I check what has arrived in ‘Goods in’ and work my way through the jobs in order of priority. I do this until I have either completed them or my working day is over.
What are the biggest challenges you face working here?
For me initially, the biggest challenge was understanding the new products to the point of being able to problem solve correctly and not rely on others when things didn’t go to plan.
What qualifications do you have?
I have a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in electronics plus 6 GCSE.
What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?
Find a job that you enjoy and that makes you happy, as you are there an awful long time!
