The Electrical Essentials Kit provides a practical introduction to the fundamental principles of electricity and electrical circuits. Through a structured series of hands-on activities, learners build their understanding from core concepts such as voltage, current, power and resistance through to more advanced topics including AC and DC circuits, capacitors, inductors, electromagnetism, transformers, motors and electrical protection.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand and apply the fundamental principles of voltage, current, resistance and electrical power, including Ohm’s Law.
  • Construct, measure and analyse electrical circuits using appropriate test equipment to measure voltage, current and resistance.
  • Investigate and calculate the behaviour of series and parallel circuits, resistor combinations and voltage dividers, including the application of Kirchhoff’s Laws.
  • Distinguish between AC and DC and investigate the behaviour of electrical components under different supply conditions.
  • Explain and investigate the characteristics and applications of resistors, capacitors and inductors, including RC and RL circuits.
  • Understand and demonstrate the principles of electromagnetism and their application in solenoids, relays, transformers and electric motors.
  • Explain the principles of electrical generation and the operation of common electrical protection devices, including fuses, circuit breakers and RCDs.
  • Apply systematic testing and fault-finding techniques to identify, diagnose and troubleshoot faults in electrical circuits.
