Polariscope

CP5220

The Polariscope is a compact, bench-top educational tool designed for in-depth exploration of stress distribution and photo elastic effects in mechanical components. Ideal for undergraduate and higher education engineering programs, this apparatus introduces students to the principles of material stress and strain using real-time Visualization techniques.

Featuring a robust frame with integrated mounting slots, the unit supports both quarter wave plates and polarization filters, which can be independently rotated for precise adjustment. This setup enables students to vary the optical output and vividly observe stress patterns through colour changes in photo elastic specimens.

A vertically mounted lightbox, included as standard, provides both monochromatic and white light illumination to enhance visibility of stress contours during experiments. Supplied specimens are made from CR39, a specialised optical polymer known for its high photo elastic sensitivity and clarity.

This solution includes a precise loading mechanism comprising a screw-jack, spring, and dial gauge, allowing accurate tension to be applied and measured up to 250N. Specimens are easily mounted using quick-connect knobs, and the loading frame is fully adjustable to accommodate different sample sizes and geometries.

Standard specimens include circular rods and square plates, with a wider selection available as optional accessories. This solution offers a practical and engaging way for students to develop a hands-on understanding of stress analysis, making it an essential addition to any strength of materials or mechanics of solids curriculum.

Learning Objectives:

  • Photo elastic analysis of standard mechanical models
  • Variation of stress colorization
  • Rotational position of wave plate and filters
