A materials and vibration range built for exploration, comparison, and learning to inspire the next generation of engineers
This advanced educational apparatus provides students with practical experience in analysing material behaviour under torsional stress, supporting the study of mechanical properties and failure mechanisms. Designed to bridge theoretical learning with hands-on experimentation, the system is an essential addition to engineering teaching laboratories.
The apparatus applies up to 30 Nm of torque to various material specimens using a precision hand-operated worm and wheel gearbox with a 60:1 ratio. This enables detailed exploration of torsional principles and material testing techniques. The system accommodates specimens up to 750mm in length between the fixed moment head and the adjustable torsion head. The movable torsion head slides along the base to facilitate testing of specimens of different lengths.
Torque is transmitted through standard hexagonal drives, allowing clear observation of how materials respond to applied forces. Students can manually adjust the angular position of the specimen using the torsion head mechanism and reference dial gauge. This capability allows for pre-setting or compensating for twist, reinforcing key concepts such as angular displacement and material deformation under torsional load.
Integrated strain gauges within the torsion head enable direct measurement of material strain during testing.
When connected to the Matrix Data Acquisition box, the system captures real-time data including rotation and torque via user-friendly software for analysis of material strength, torsional deformation, and failure characteristics. This comprehensive approach enhances student understanding of material response to torsional stress through both qualitative and quantitative investigation.

This product comes supplied with the Matrix Data Acquisition box, which is a universal interface providing a single platform for reliable data capture.
It is included as standard with all relevant products, ensuring every system is ready for digital data acquisition out of the box.
Direct integration with Matrix Flowcode enables real-time acquisition, analysis, and visualisation without extra hardware or software.
It captures key mechanical test data including:
